The eye piece is the component of the microscope you look through. The eye piece has a magnification specified for that given eye piece. In this example the eye piece magnification is 6x.

The objective is the component of the microscope that also applies additional magnification.

In this example you would take the 6x magnification and multiple it by the different objectives to given the total magnification you are able to see with the different objectives.

The answer is 6x (eye piece) x 40x (objective) for a total magnification of 240x
