2(x + 1.7) = 42.7
Explanation:
"adds 1.7 to the number" represents x + 1.7
"then double the result" combined with "adds 1.7 to the number" represents 2(x + 1.7)
"answer of 42.7" combine with all of the above makes 2(x + 1.7) = 42.7
