1. The numbers are the mass number of the element and refer to how many protons and neutrons there are in the nucleus.
2. The particle that makes these isotopes different is the neutron. For example, Carbon-14 has two more neutrons than Carbon-12.
3. The particle that makes them all still Carbon is the proton. For example, Carbon-14 and Carbon-12 both possess six protons.
