Answer:

100 miles.

Explanation:

The combined speed of the 2 trains = 38 + 42 = 80 mph.

The time taken before they crossed = 15:35 - 14:20

= 1:15 = 1.25 hours

Speed = distance / time, so

80 = distance / 1.25

Distance = 80 * 1.25

100 miles.

Answer:

100 miles

Explanation:

A -----------P------------------ B

tom start at 14:20 with speed of 38mph

ben with speed 42mph

meeting time is 15:35

time difference is 75 min = 75/60 = 1.25 hours

distance travelled by tom is AP

AP = v * t

= 38 * 1.25

= 47.5 miles

distance travelled by ben is BP

BP = v * t

= 42 * 1.25

= 52.5 miles

distance between two cities is AB = AP + PB

= 47.5 + 52.5

= 100 miles
