A recipe for biscuits says to mix 6 cups of flour with 2 cups of milk.

How many cups of milk would you need for 5 cups of flour?

1(2)/(3) cups of milk

Explanation:

So if you have the ratio of 6 cups of flour to 2 cups of milk you can make this the fraction:
(6)/(2) and then for the 5 cups of flour to 'x' cups of milk the fraction would be:
(5)/(x)

To solve for 'x', let the 2 fractions equal each other and cross multiply.


(6)/(2) = (5)/(x)


x = (2*5)/(6) = (10)/(6) = (5)/(3) = 1(2)/(3)

So you would need
(5)/(3) or 1 and
(2)/(3) cups of milk for 5 cups of flour.
