PLEASE HELP ME ON THIS QUESTION

Sara bought 3/4 of a pound of bananas and 3/5 of a pound of pears. How much fruit did Sara buy?
I dont know if this is adding or subtracting.....

Okay, so if she bought 3/4 pound of bananas AND 3/5 pound of pears, then we need to find the SUM, or total amount of fruit she bought. Therefore, addition.

Since we’re adding, we need to make the denominators the same. 4 and 5 are both factors by 20, so we can make that our denominator.

3/4 —> 15/20 (since we multiplied 4 by 5, we also need to multiply numerator by 5)
3/5 —> 12/20 (since we multiplied 5 by 4, we also need to multiply numerator by 4)

Now, we can just add the numerators
15/20 + 12/20 = 27/20
