The scarlete Letter

The reader can reasonably conclude that in the seventh paragraph of chapter 11, when Mr. Dimmesdale confesses that he is "altogether vile...,"
A he is not speaking of himself but of all mankind.
B he confesses that he is the father of Pearl and has been hiding his sin all this time.
C he is speaking of Roger Chillingworth and any other official in the town.
D he only confesses that he is a sinner in general and does not mention any specifics.
