Answer:

  • 7.5 unit²

Explanation:

Refer to attached

Find the y-intercept:

  • x = 0 ⇒ y = 4*0 - 8*0 - 5 = - 5

Find the x-intercepts:

  • y = 0 ⇒ 4x² - 8x - 5 = 0
  • 4x² - 8x + 4 - 9 = 0
  • 4(x - 1)² = 9
  • (x - 1)² = 9/4
  • x - 1 = 3/2 ⇒ x = 2.5
  • x - 1 = - 3/2 ⇒ x = - 0.5

We have vertices of the triangle at:

  • (- 0.5, 0), (2.5, 0) and (0, -5)

Base of the triangle is:

  • 2.5 - (-0.5) = 3

Height of triangle:

  • 0 - (-5) = 5

The area is:

  • A = 1/2bh
  • A = 1/2*3*5 = 7.5
