n Ms. Salmon’s 4th grade class, there are half as many boys as there are girls. There are 30 students all together. How many are boys? How many are girls? Explain how you solved the problem.

Answer:

10 boys, 20 girls

Explanation:

So there are 30 students

Our first assumption is 15 boys, 15 girls. 50-50, right?

But there are half as many boys as girls.

So there's twice as many girls in the class.

Let's have B = boys and G = girls

B + 2G = All 30 Students

2G = 2/3 (20/30)

B = 1/3 (10/30)

20 + 10 = 30

10 boys, 20 girls.
