Chandra pays for 3GB of data on her mobile phone every month and her phone keeps track of her data usage throughout the month.

1) If she uses 13% of her data by the fourth day of the month, how many GB of data is this? 2) If she uses 1.7 GB, what percentage of her data limit has she used? 3) If she uses an average of 0.1 GB per day, what percent of her data will she have used by the 20th day of the month? Will she go over if she continues using data at the same rate?

Problem 1

13% = 13/100 = 0.13

13% of 3 = 0.13*3 = 3.9

Chandra uses 3.9 GB by the fourth day of the month.

Answer: 3.9 GB

Problem 2

(1.7)/(3) = 0.5667 approximately. Move the decimal point over two spots to the right to convert to a percentage.

Answer: Approximately 56.57%

Problem 3

She uses 0.1 GB a day on average. After 20 days, she'll use 20*0.1 = 2 GB assuming the rate is kept constant. This is approximately 2/3 = 0.6667 = 66.67% of the monthly data cap.

If the month has 31 days, then she uses 0.1*31 = 3.1 GB which is over the data cap. For any other month with 30 days, she'll use 0.1*30 = 3 GB of data which is exactly at the cap. In the case of February, she'll be under the cap since this month has less than 30 days (even on a leap year).

Answers:

  • She uses roughly 66.67% of the data cap by the 20th day.
  • She goes over the data cap if the month has 31 days; otherwise, she'll be at or under the data cap.
