Look at this example:

Any number (except zero) divided by itself equals 1.

For example, 25/25 = 1,

but 25 = 5²,

so 25/25 = 5²/5²

The rule of dividing two powers with the same base is to use the same base and subtract the powers.

5²/5² = 5^(2 - 2) = 5^0

By the rule of exponents, 5²/5² = 5^0,

but we saw above that 5²/5² = 25/25 = 1, so

5^0 must equal 1.

This led to the following definition of zero exponent.

Definition:

For any number a, a^0 = 1.
