why was slavery a major issue of concern between the federal and state governments in the 1800s leading up to the civil war?

Well t was a big deal for the southern states. The south was economically dependent on slavery, while the north wasn’t. Many people in the south wanted slavery to keep the economy alive. The north wanted slavery abolished and people had two main reasons for that:

1. It was inhumane to many

2. Most people cared about the northern economy, and they feared that many escaping slaves would go to the north and take the jobs away from people who were already there.
