Magnets work because opposite poles are attracted to each other, this is how the objects move (depending on how the atoms and how to iron is, it could be much stronger or weaker)

If there is a system of magnets there is potential energy, when you let go of the magnets (or when they stick together) it converts the potential energy to kinetic energy because it moved.
