Among the other achievements of Reconstruction were the South's first state-funded public school systems, more equitable taxation legislation, laws against racial discrimination in public transport and accommodations and ambitious economic development programs (including aid to railroads and other enterprises).

Southerners resented Northern “carpetbaggers,” who took advantage of the South during Reconstruction. Southern states adopted Black Codes to limit the economic and physical freedom of former slaves. Reconstruction ended in 1877 as a result of a compromise over the outcome of the election of 1876.
