Jacob helped his grandma peel potatoes for the family's dinner. His grandma peeled 4 times as many potatoes as Jacob peeled. If Jacob's grandma peeled 16 potatoes, how many potatoes did they peel altogether?

This question has two parts. First you know that his grandma peeled 16 potatoes, and if Jacob peeled 4 times as many, you have to multiply the amount his grandma peeled by 4 and then add the total to his grandmas total. So the algebraic setup would be x=16+(16•4) and the answer would be 80.

All together they peeled 20
J:jacob
G:grandma
4J=G. Since she peeled 4 times as he did
4J=16
J=4
So jacob peeled 4 potatoes
All in all:J+G
4+16=20
