Why are there 16 ounces in a pound but 14 pounds in a stone?

Answer:

The pound originally was 12 oz, but was increased to 15 and then 16 oz later. One should remember that the weights on the scales were marked in oz, of 1, 2, 4, 8, &c, and in one case, the 16 oz simply became the pound.
