A decimeter (dm) is 10 cm, or 0.1 m. A cube with this dimension has a volume of 1000 cm³ = 1 liter. A foot is 30.48 cm, or 3.048 dm. I personally find it convenient to use dm as a metric unit of distance in problems involving volumes in liters.
