Add one to both sides of the equation:


x^2 - 2x + 1 = 15 + 1


\Rightarrow (x - 1)^2 = 16

Taking the square root of the equation above, we get


x - 1 = \pm 4

or


x = 1 \pm 4 = 5, -3
