Explanation:

First we need to find the LCM (Least Common Multiple) in this case our common denominator will be 8. We must now multiply 8 by 9 to get 72 and then we divide by the denominator, 2, to get the numerator of 36. Now we have

-5/8 + 36/8.

We can just add the numerators like usual now, to get 31/8.
