In order to transform the given equation into its standard form, Ax + By = C (where A & B ≠ 0, and A is non-negative):

Add 1/3x to both sides:

1/3x + y = -1/3x + 1/3x - 1

1/3x + y = -1

Multiply both sides by 3 to eliminate the fraction (turning 1/3 into an integer):
(3) (1/3x + y) = -1 (3)

x + 3y = -3 (This is the standard form).
