n = -7

Explanation:

to solve for a variable (in this case it's n) we have to isolate it. we do this by moving like terms on one side of the equation.

-53 = 3 + 8n

- 3 -3

since we are subtracting 3 on the right side, we also have to subtract it on the left side.

-56 = 8n

we divide both sides by 8

n = -7
