I’m failing 9th grade, and I’m not good at math, if someone could help me solve this last question for homework I would appreciate it so much!!

Solve the equations below, combining like terms first.

7x+3+1x=16+3

Also if anyone can help me solve this I need to know how you done it as to I have to show work on paper. Thank you to anyone/everyone who helps me!!

Happy Halloween!!:))

Answer: x = 2

Explanation:

7x + 3 + 1x (could be written as just x) = 16 + 3

1. combine like terms on each side, 7x + x equals to 8x and because 3 is the only term which does not have a similar pair on that side, you leave it as it is for now. Then you combine the like terms on the other side, 16 + 3 gives you 19.

2. now you have 8x + 3 = 19, since you want to keep the side with the x without any other unlike terms, you get rid of that other term (if there is one), in this case you subtract 3 on both sides because you do the opposite when you’re putting the term to the other side to isolate your variable. example: 3, it’s a positive number so you would subtract 3 on both sides cause it’s the opposite of positive 3

3. now you have 8x = 16

now that your x variable is without another unlike term on the side it’s at, you can get rid of the number in front of it (8) by dividing 8 on both sides to “get rid of it” 8/8x would cancel out and 16/8 would be 2, so your answer would be x = 2
