Last week, I went to TJ's birthday party. Before even walking out the door my parents made it clear to me that I had to be home by eleven pm, or my car privileges would be taken for the next week. I promised that I would make it home on time, and I knew I would have plenty of time on my hands to keep this promise. After all, TJ's part started at six, which gave me four hours chill before I had to drive home.
There was no way that this plan could've gone wrong. Four hours sounds like plenty of time right? Yeah, I thought so too, but I was wrong. On the ride home I could feel myself starting to doze. This was not going to turn out well if I didn't hurry up and get home. I decided that the best way to get home would be to go as fast as I could. Obviously this proved to be the worst possible idea when, all of a sudden, I heard sirens behind me. I didn't have time for this. Do you know what would happen if I got home late, and had to show my parents a speeding ticket?
Darius slowly pulled over to the side of the road, and put his car in park. As the officer came to a halt behind him, he pull out his license and registration. The officer approached asking "Son, can you give me at least one good reason why you thought it was okay to go 65mph in a 50 mph zone?" "I'm sorry sir, I just really needed to get home" Darius said. After handing him his license and registration, Darius sat motionless, looking straight forward as the officer studied him quietly.
Darius was scared as he silently waited for his ticket. He knew what this meant, he would be in trouble, with his parents, for a long time, all because of one mistake. The officer spoke softly and said, "Listen, I wont sit here and justify what you did, but I'm going to let you off with a warning". Darius slowly raised his head to look the officer in the eyes, he couldn't believe what he had just heard. "Are you for real right now", Darius asked as shock and relief flooded through him. "Yes, now go on home before I change my mind", said the officer. Darius watched as the officer nodded and began to walk back to his car.
The next day Darius told TJ what had happened. TJ didn't believe a word he said, but Darius didn't care. Officers weren't easygoing where they were from, and Darius knew he had encountered someone unlike anyone he had ever met that night. He met someone with compassion, and took this to heart. He had learned his lesson, but he didn't have to face disappointment from his parents. Darius never forgot that day, because it changed his outlook. There are kind people, usually those who you least expect kindness from.
