To find x, the hypotenuse, we need to use sin because we have been given the opposite (the side opposite the angle 35°) and we need to work out the hypotenuse (the longest or slanted side):

SOH, CAH, TOA

sin(θ) = opposite ÷ hypotenuse

Sub in the values (we don't know the hypotenuse so i've called it x):

sin(35) = 18 ÷ x (multiply both sides by x)

x × sin(35) = 18 (divide both sides by sin(35))

x = 18 ÷ sin(35) = 31.38204...

x ≈ 31.4
