Well the top answer was very intelligent and accurate. So I just gotta say, you were treated like garbage if you weren’t a rich white man. No offense to rich white men, of course.

Answer:

Men were expected to be the head of the household when married and be the breadwinners. They were expected to be a good husband and father. Also to govern their families wisely and with kindness. For women it was a norm to be married or yet to be married.
