Let the student tickerts and general tickets be x and y respectively

  • x+y=17=>x=17-y
  • 2x+3y=42--(2)

From (1) put in (2)

  • 2(17-y)+3y=42
  • 34+y=42
  • y=8

And

  • x=17-8=9

Answer:

  • 9 student tickets and 8 general admission tickets

Explanation:

Let the number of student tickets is s and general admission tickets - g.

Set equations and solve:

  • s + g = 17
  • 2s + 3g = 42

Double the first equation and subtract from the second to eliminate s:

  • 2s + 3g - 2s - 2g = 42 - 2*17
  • g = 8

Find s:

  • s = 17 - 8 = 9
