In the last section of her essay, the author describes how her mother polished her grandmother’s shoes on the day she had to move to a nursing home. The grandmother "left her house walking, supported by her children, carrying her pocket book, and wearing her polished black shoes." Explain why this story is significant to the author.

I believe you're talking about "Growing Up Asian in America".

This is significant to the author because during it she saw how her mother and relatives worked in unison to help and support her grandmother who could no longer live alone. They made sure she felt loved and cared for. Her mothers actions helped to further develop the the author’s view of her identity as a Japanese American women.
