Starting #of candies = 45

Tom ate 1/3 of that ⇒ Tom ate (1/3 * 45 =) 15 candies ⇒ candies left (= 45 - 15 =) 30 ⇒ Roger ate two-fifths of the reamaining candies ⇒ Roger ate [2/5 * 30 =] 12 candies ⇒ candies left (= 30 - 12 =) 18

Answer:

90 Candies

Explanation:

Since Roger ate 2/5 of the remaining candies, we know that 18 is 3/5 of the remaining. 18/3 is 6, so 1/5 of the remaining is 6 candies. 6*5 = 30, so there were 30 candies remaining. Since Tom ate 1/3 of the total candies, we can multiply 30 by 3 to get a total of 90 original candies in the box.
