A scuba diver descends in the water at a rate of 20 1/2 feet per minute for 2.8 minutes. He immediately changes course when he sees a large fish and ascends at a rate of 25 feet per minute for 2 minutes. What is the scuba diver's position relative to sea level after the 4.8 minutes?

Answer:

  • 7.4 feet below sea level

Explanation:

Assumed the starting point is the sea level 0.

After 2.8 min the diver is at position:

  • 20 1/2 * 2.8 =
  • 20.5 * 2.8 =
  • 57.4 feet below sea level

The position change after next 2 minutes:

  • 25*2 = 50 feet

The position of the diver after 4.8 min:

  • 57.4 - 50 = 7.4 feet below sea level
