Watch the movie about the bobbing wax globules inside a lava lamp. It appears that the wax globules stop rising and start sinking back down when they get near the top of the lamp chamber. Why is this behavior different from air parcels in the atmosphere, since air parcels usually either keep rising indefinitely or they stop rising and float around where they stop rising?
