x^2 - y^2

Explanation:

In the following problem, we can use the distributive property to simplify:

(x + y)(x - y)

We can start by multiplying the x's together, giving us x^2.

Next is the first x multiplied by -y in the second parenthesis. This gives us -xy.

Now, we can move on the the y in the first parenthesis: y times x(in the second parenthesis) is xy.

Lastly, we have y times -y which gives us -y^2.

If we aa these together we get:

x^2 - xy + xy - y^2

If we add -xy and xy it would be 0 because if you add a number with it's opposite, they cancel out. We are just left with x^2 - y^2.
