7 + 4x = -6x + 8

* subtract 7 from both sides

4x = -6x + 1

* Add 6x to both sides

10 x = 1

* Divide both sides by 10

Well, you’re going to start by simplifying each side of the equation.

This step makes sure that you know to distribute the negative.

-5x + [-(-7-4x)] = -2(3x-4)

Continue to simplify. Start by distributing across the parentheses.

-5x+(7+4x)= -6x+8
-5x+4x+7= -6x+8
-x+7=-6x+8

Once you can’t simplify either side any more, you try and isolate the variable onto one side.

-x+7=-6x+8

7=-5x+8

Then isolate the constants into one side.

7=-5x+8
