Kahlo starting painting after a traumatic accident she was in, while she was stuck in a bed for weeks she began to paint to pass time, her first painting was called “Self Portrait in a Velvet Dress”. Most of her work was reflected off depression and her relationships. For example, one her paintings titled “The Broken Column” was based off her struggles, physically and mentally, during her spine incident.
