We have to find the LCM(least common multiple) of the two numbers.

24 is the LCM, because;

Multiples of 8 are -

8 x 1 = 8

8 x 2 = 16

8 x 3 = 24

Multiples of 12 are -

1 x 12 = 12

2 x 12 = 24

24 is their least common multiple.
