The cause of the liquids rising are
(Cohesive forces between molecules)
For example: Attractive forces between molecules of the same type are called cohesive forces.

The logic falls in the category known as the Capillary rise or capillarity is a phenomenon in which liquid spontaneously rises in certain terms or falls in a narrow space or in the voids of a porous material.
The surface adhesion forces or internal cohesion present at the interface between a liquid and a solid stretch the liquid and form a curved surface which in terms are called as a meniscus.

We could later on conclude that fractures can be desaturated more easily than the matrix if fracture apertures are larger than matrix pore sizes.

I hope I helped in some way, I had to type all this out, and good luck on your work.
