A group of foreign students visited the Smithsonian Museum.

Some students took taxis and 3 students took a subway from
their hotel. Each taxi carried 4 students. On the way back,
8 students took the subway while the rest took taxis. Each taxi
carried 3 students. The number of taxis and the number of
students were the same for both trips. How many students
and how many taxis were there for each trip?

Answer:

23 students

5 taxis

Explanation:

4x + 3 = 3x + 8

x + 3 = 8

x = 5

4(5) + 3 = 23

3(5) + 8 = 23

There were 23 students and 5 taxis.
