2. One airplane holds 50 passengers more than another airplane.

Together they hold 450 passengers. How many passengers does
each airplane hold?

Let’s call the number of passengers in airplane 1 m and the number of passengers in airplane 2 f
The relationship between m and f is: f = m + 50 or m = f - 50
m + f = 450
Now I’m replacing f with m + 50, because they’re equal (as proven above)
So
m + m + 50 = 450
I’ll take away 50 from both sides so now
2m = 400
If 2m = 400, then m = 200
So airplane one can hold 200 passengers
Since f = m + 50, airplane 2 can hold 200 + 50 passengers, so 250 passengers
250 + 200 = 400, which proves the answer is right
