Explanation:

You can actually make this easier to do by re-arranging the kite assuming that each half (one upper, one lower) are reflected and therefore equal. All four triangles have right angles, and there are two pairs of triangles with different measurements:

SMALLER (Left hand) TRIANGLES:

You have two triangles, each with a (h) height of 3 and a (w) width of 4. Because you have two of these triangles, you can use w*h since together the two triangles would create a rectangle.

3*4=12

LARGER (Right hand) TRIANGLES:

Same scenario: height of 3, width of 8. Two triangles can be re-arranged to create a rectangle.

3*8=24

Add the two areas and you've got your kite area.

TOTAL AREA: 36 units^2
