Add both equations

(-2x) -4y +(-x) +y=-24

-3x-3y=-24. Take - 3 common factor

-3(x+y)=-24. Devide both sides by - 3

X+y=8

Adding the second equation with x+y=8

-x+y +x+y=14

2y=14

Y=7

In equation (x+y=8) substitute y with 7

X+7=8

X=1
