Reason: By the way you phrased the question I am assuming that the author is also a part of the story. Since the author is part of the story, and therefore a character, he can not know about his father when he was younger, only narrators can do that. Also the same goes for the grandfather. Since the author is also a part of the story, most probably the main character, he would not refer to himself in third person.
