We first multiply the first coefficient (5) by the the last one (-3):

5 * -3 =-15.

Now e need 2 numbers whose product is -15 and whose sum = the middle coefficient in the equation (this is -2).

These numbers are -5 and + 3.

So we replace the -2x in the equation by -5x + 3x:-

5x^2 - 5x + 3x - 3 = 0

Now we factor by grouping:

5x(x - 1) + 3(x - 1) = 0

(x - 1) is common so:

(5x + 3)(x - 1) = 0

Giving x = -3/5 and x = 1.
