When you vote for a candidate, you will put your vote in a box when you are done in the booth or if you mailed it people will take the letter and run the ballot from both forms of submission through a ballet counter which adds one vote for the person who you voted to, then after the election time period, those people counting it will send a final submission of the counts to a place that I do not know what I'm not that smart sorry, but either way they will do that and it will count as a popularity vote which can slightly influence the electoral vote which is the more important one where representatives from each state vote on who to elect as president I also think that the popularity vote has an effect on if the state is labeled as democratic or republican, or anything else.
