Why is it necessary for the diaphragm to relax and for the chest cavity to recede during exhalation?

The diaphragm, which is placed beneath the lungs, is the main respiratory muscle. A vacuum is created by this contraction, which sucks air into the lungs. The diaphragm relaxes and returns to its domelike shape during exhalation, forcing air out of the lungs.
