Indentured servitude was normally other Europeans working off their debt, (for example, I'll pay for you to come to America, but you have to work for me for 5 years). Normally, indentured servants were treated bad but still had more rights than a slave, who has none. Some colonies would choose slaves because they have no rights, they can do whatever they want to them. Slaves were risky though, they can rebel, refuse, to work or run. Indentured servitude might have been chosen because if they refused to work, rebel, or run, they can be held accountable for what they did.
