If 0 < |a| < 1 then f(x) is stretched horizontally

If a < 0 then f(x) is also reflected in the y-axis

g(x) has been squashed vertically by a scale factor of 1/3 (green on the attached diagram) and then reflected in the x-axis (red on the attached diagram)
