Kurds

Kurds, or Kurdish people, speak the Kurdish language. They are a multilingual people and speak two or more languages. Generally, they speak Kurdish as well as the language of the nation where they are from, such as, Arabic, Persian, or Turkish. The Kurds living in diaspora communities are fluent in three or more languages. For example, Kurdish Christians and Kurdish Jews speak Aramaic as well.

Kurds are natives of the Middle East. They are part of the Iranian population. They inhabit the Kurdistan region which includes parts of Iraq, Iran, Turkey, and Syria. It is believed that there are about 34 million Kurds living in different regions of the world. The majority of Kurds live in the Middle East and also Georgia, Armenia, Russia, Israel, Azerbaijan, Lebanon, United States, and many European countries. Kurds are believed to be the fourth largest ethnic community in the world living in the Middle East. Only Arabs, Persians, and Turks supersede them.

Kurds are mainly Sunni Muslims, but there are minorities of Shia Muslims also living in regions like Kermanshah Province and llam, Iran. Fayli Kurds are also Shia Muslims living in southeastern and central Iraq. Alevis are another community of Shia Muslim Kurds living mainly in Turkey, Tunceli, and Sivas, etc.

Kurdish culture is mainly a mixture of ancient Iranians having Islamic roots and is Hurrian or indigenous. The Kurd women, unlike many other Muslim cultures, do not cover their faces, and men and women participate in mixed-gender activities.

Arabs

Arabs, or Arabic people, speak Arabic. Arabic is a Semitic language which originated in Arabia. From Arabia the language spread to West Asia and North Africa. Due to the language and spread of the culture, the people living in these areas started being denominated as Arabs.

Arabs mainly live in the Arab world which includes Western Asia and North Africa. Arabs are identified as Arabs on the basis of three main criteria; the language, the genealogy, and the culture. Genealogically, people who can trace their ancestry to different tribes of Arabia are Arabs. The tribes of Arabia refer to original people of the Arabian Peninsula. Linguistically, those whose first language is Arabic including the many varieties are considered Arabs. Depending upon the language there are over 300 million Arabs.

Looking back at history, Arabs were not defined by their religion. They are people from before the rise of Islam. There used to be Arab Christians who today form almost 10 per cent of the Arab population. Arab Jewish tribes also exist, but the modern world Arabs are mainly Shia, Sunni, and Ismaili Muslims.
