We can make an equation for this!

2x - 4 = 5
2x - 4 + 4 = 5 + 4
2x = 9
x = 9/2

Explanation:

let the number be x

x+x -4=5

2x- 4=5

2x =5+4

2x =9

divide both sides by 2

x=9/2=4.5
