The area of a rectangle is length times width.

If the area is 300 sq. in. when it's cut in half, then the entire area is 600 sq. in.

The width is 1/6 of the length.

Putting that together, we have

600 = (L)(1/6 L)

600 = 1/6 L^2 multiply each side by 6

3600 = L^2 take the square root of each side

60 = L

So the lenght is 60 inches and the width is 1/6 of that, or 10 inches.
