While throughout a miserable lifetime, there are also people out there who care and who want to try to help. This had been demonstrated in ‘girl in pieces’ because we see Charlotte Davis meet new people, and use art to express herself.
Throughout the middle of the book, we can see Charlottes struggles, which the author demonstrates by having her not speak due to her physical and emotional trauma. Charlie soon begins to feel safer at Creeley; she begins to use her voice in group therapy, and make art. Throughout this, we see Charlie’s progress throughout her mental struggles, and her getting better and healing.
Towards the end of the book, Charlie is discharged from the hospital due to her insurance issues; her progress slipping away. She is discharged to her mother. Not long after, she finds a job washing dishes at a coffee shop. Her progress is good; however she still struggles with addictive self harm, but hides it.
She builds a relationship with Riley West, an older man who abuses drugs and alcohol. She begins taking free art classes, considering she doesn’t want to lose Riley. However, she keeps in mind he has issues, and has a negative impact on her.
The overall theme of this book is although times are hard, there are always people who are willing to reach out, and things get better.
