Answer:

The importance of media in this era of information cannot be overemphasized. The media is a double edged sword. It can be a frightful weapon of violence when it propagates messages of intolerance or disinformation that manipulate public sentiment. Using a blend of popular entertainment and proselytizing by announcers, the tilted broadcast/ telecast demonized one set of people, popular sentiments and build fear and resentment in other groups. But there is another aspect of media. It can be an instrument of conflict resolution, when the information is reliable, respects human rights, and represents diverse views and opinions. It’s the kind of media that enables a society to make well informed choices which is precursor of democratic governance. It is media that reduces conflict and fosters human security. Media can contribute to societal reconciliation, change misperception and broaden understanding of the causes and consequences of conflict. The proposed conference discussed media’s potential for positive influence on any conflict resolution process.
